On the Issues

Few cities in the world have as rich an artistic community as San Francisco, and the range and quality of art and entertainment that is produced and presented here leads the nation.  But these industries are all too often considered as an amenity, as something that San Francisco is “lucky” to have not something that is essential to what makes this town the place we’re proud to call home.

For San Francisco to flourish in this new century, Board of Supervisors President David Chiu believes that we must have a Mayor who doesn't just wait for an issue to cross his desk. The Mayor must have both a record of results and a vision for the future of the City we call home.

That's why David has released his Blueprint for a 21st Century San Francisco - his vision for how we can build an even better City than the one we already love.

Here are some examples of the work that I've done to serve our community as the President of the Board of Supervisors. In the coming weeks, I will be engaging a diverse group of community members and policy experts to develop a comprehensive platform, and you will be seeing policy papers that hone our best ideas. If you have ideas that you'd like to contribute to the campaign, please email: policyideas@davidchiuformayor.com.

Our public school system must nourish each child to reach his or her educational potential. Every San Franciscan—whether he/she has a child in the system or not—has a stake in and a responsibility toward ensuring that every child in our city receives an excellent public education that prepares him or her for college, career, and a lifetime of civic engagement.

Our next Mayor must use the bully pulpit and moral authority of the office to bring all stakeholders to the table - parents and concerned residents, business and community leaders, teachers, administrators and students themselves - to build a world class public education system right here in San Francisco.

Nam at iuvaret disputationi, no augue deleniti iracundia mea. Eu vivendo blandit electram duo. Sea modus facilisi comprehensam et, his cetero veritus omnesque an, putent expetendis constituam no eam. Cu usu impedit postulant, eos cu explicari cotidieque. Etiam habemus cu pri, duo tritani mandamus id, graecis nominati pri eu.

Our city's budget is more than just a set of numbers - it's an opportunity to make a statement about who we are as San Franciscans.

Today's housing and land use policies impact what San Francisco will look like for the next generation. Smart land use planning is the foundation of a successful 21st century city – it provides the foundation on which our families can grow, our local businesses can thrive, and our diverse communities can engage with each other.

We must remain committed to providing safe and affordable housing so that all who want to call San Francisco home can continue to do so. Development projects, no matter how large or small, must have neighborhood input and provide tangible community benefits. And we must always keep an eye to how our urban planning policies are promoting economic development and job growth.

Join hundreds of San Franciscans and share you thoughts, experiences, and ideas on Education, Transportation, Housing & Land Use, Environment, Jobs & Economic Development, and Public Safety.

Building San Francisco's economy and creating jobs for our residents has been David’s top priority as President of the Board of Supervisors, and will continue to be at the top of his list as Mayor. David will protect the jobs of today, while making sure the jobs of tomorrow are created right here in San Francisco.

As Supervisor, David has promoted job growth by eliminating dozens of fees nickling and diming local small businesses. He has supported programs such as Local Hiring and JobsNow2 that provide incentives for businesses to hire San Franciscans. David has also been a champion of reforming our business tax to make sure the jobs of the 21st century innovation economy remain here in San Francisco where they belong.

San Franciscans must feel confident that government is working for them. Our residents often feel disconnected from a $6.8 billion, 26,000 employee, 50-plus department bureaucracy that may be doing good work, but is too often not communicating in a meaningful way. David has seen first-hand how City Hall can be overly influenced by lobbyists and powerbrokers who are trying to game the system on behalf of those who can “pay to play.” He knows that it is important for the Mayor to lead the way in putting mechanisms in place to keep government transparent, responsive, and accountable.

David has been committed to building safe and secure communities      since his days as a San Francisco prosecutor and judge-arbitrator      for a neighborhood community court.  As President of the Board of      Supervisors, he helped to secure resources to build a new police      command center and new neighborhood fire stations, and led the      successful campaign to pass June 2010’s Proposition B, a bond      measure that is rebuilding a reliable water system for our City in      emergencies and disasters.

Transportation is vital to San Francisco’s economy and quality of life, but it has not received the attention it deserves. As a city, we must bring our transportation system into the 21st century, ensuring safe, reliable and affordable mobility for all. We can do this by building on what we have, learning from other cities throughout the world, and charting a new course where necessary. As Mayor, David Chiu will work to ensure that we take these steps to remove the barriers to better mobility in San Francisco.

San Francisco evokes justifiable pride for our residents who grew up here, and each year, our urban charms and natural beauty attract thousands of new city dwellers from around the world. But as our 21st century San Francisco takes shape, policymakers and residents alike face a disturbing trend: every year, families are leaving San Francisco.
